Brief Project Description
This project involved the comprehensive restoration of a historically significant Queen Anne Revival residence, with a focus on preserving original materials, craftsmanship, and architectural integrity. The goal was not simply to renovate, but to return the home to an authentic 1905 appearance—both structurally and aesthetically—while ensuring long-term durability and continued residential use
- Full exterior restoration (roofing, soffit, fascia, cornice, porch)
- Wood window sash restoration (including storms and screens)
- Historic glass replacement and reglazing
- Exterior paint removal, analysis, and period-correct repainting
- Structural stabilization (porch leveling and reattachment)
- Interior plaster repair and skim coating
- Stained and leaded glass restoration
- Flooring refinishing (oak, maple, fir)
- Interior millwork conservation (doors, casings, staircases)
- Period-appropriate fixture and hardware sourcing
- Kitchen and pantry restoration using historically accurate elements
- Interior design and furnishing consistent with pre-1925 standards
Project Progress
A primary challenge was maintaining an exceptionally high level of historical authenticity while addressing significant deterioration across both structural and decorative elements.
- Removing multiple layers of modern materials while preserving original substrates
- Restoring heavily deteriorated exterior wood components with exact material matches
- Carefully stripping and conserving original decorative cornice mouldings
- Rehabilitating damaged stained-glass elements, including reconstructing missing sections
- Identifying and replicating original paint colours through analysis
- Sourcing historically accurate lighting, fixtures, and materials
- Preserving rarely retained service areas such as the pantry, maid’s quarters, and secondary staircase
All restoration work followed a strict philosophy: repair wherever possible, and only replace when necessary, using historically accurate materials and methods.
Outcome / Final Result
The completed project represents a museum-quality restoration that accurately reflects a middleclass Edwardian home as it would have appeared in 1905.
- Preservation of nearly all original architectural elements, including windows, doors, millwork, and floor plan
- Full restoration of the exterior using original colours and traditional materials
- Reinstatement of missing historical features based on physical evidence and period references
- Creation of a fully cohesive interior environment using exclusively pre-1925 furnishings and finishes
The result is a rare and highly authentic example of early 20th-century domestic architecture in Winnipeg—demonstrating both craftsmanship and historical integrity at an exceptional level.
